CHRIS SMAILES

Director

Chris is a highly experienced tax, trust, and estates lawyer. Chris offers diverse legal services in:

  • Tax and advice and disputes - objections, appeals, private binding rulings and negotiations with the ATO. Transfer duty, payroll tax and land tax advice, objections and appeals and negotiations with the OSR.

  • Trusts, Family office, legal and advisory, business and personal succession planning for high net worth individuals and family and corporate groups and related tax, commercial and corporate advice and documentation.

  • Estates (including contested wills), trusts of all types and acting for trustees and beneficiaries in a multitude of structures.

  • Companies- advising directors and shareholders in private company groups.

  • Related Commercial Law , drafting and documentation.

Chris’s client base comprises high net worth family and corporate groups and individuals, often referred by other advisers and Chris works closely with accountants, family lawyers and other lawyers, financial planners and other professionals.

Prior to July 2021 Chris lead the EY Oceania Private Client Law team after having been Managing Partner and co-founder of multi award winning boutique tax law firm Norton & Smailes which was acquired by EY in April 2016. Since inception of Doyle’s Legal awards, he has featured every year in the first tier or preeminent categories of both tax and of wills and estates, including as preeminent in both categories in the 2021 edition.

Chris is a regular speaker at conferences on a range of tax and trust and estates issues as well as being an occasional contributor to Thomson Reuters Weekly Tax Bulletin.

Chris graduated with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Western Australia and is admitted in the Supreme Court of Western Australia, the Federal Court of Australia and the High Court of Australia. He is also a Chartered Tax Adviser.

 
 
 
 

ALAN KRAWITZ

Alan is a founding Director of Smailes Krawitz. Alan has 20 years of experience acting for privately owned enterprises, high net-worth individuals and corporate groups in the areas of tax, trusts, wills, estates and commercial law. Alan is sought after by accounting, law, and financial planning firms on behalf of their clients.

Prior to establishing Smailes Krawitz, Alan helped lead the private client law team as a director at Ernst & Young (EY) in Perth. He was previously a partner at Norton & Smailes, the pre-eminent tax law firm in Western Australia before its acquisition by Ernst & Young in 2016.

Alan is admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Western Australia and is entitled to practice in the High Court of Australia, the Federal Court of Australia and the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Paula Tang

Paula is a commercial, trust, estates and agribusiness lawyer with over 15 years experience acting for high-net-worth individuals, family offices and private enterprise. Paula has been the Managing Director of a large export abattoir and has extensive international commercial experience and understands the specific challenges faced by agribusinesses.

Paula previously worked in a top tier international law firm and has most recently been recognised in Doyles Guide 2022 as a Wills, Estates & Succession Planning Law Rising Star.

Paula holds a Master of Taxation, Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce and is admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

 
 
 

Andrew Giorgi

Andrew is a tax and commercial lawyer.

Andrew routinely acts in tax audits, investigations and disputes for a wide range of clients including individuals, private groups and companies. Supplementing his tax practice, Andrew also acts in commercial matters including advising on business acquisitions and disposals, drafting of commercial documents, estate planning and providing general commercial law advice.

Clients of Smailes Krawitz benefit from Andrew’s well-rounded skillset. Andrew started his legal career as a Litigation Officer in the Australian Public Service. Having since worked for a national law firm, Andrew routinely acted for insolvency practitioners, government agencies, insurers and banks in commercial litigation, taxation matters, insolvency matters, ASIC investigations, debt recovery and professional negligence claims. Andrew has been recognized as a key lawyer by The Legal 500 in Restructuring and Insolvency.

Andrew was awarded a Master of Taxation Law with Distinction from the University of Western Australia and has lectured at universities at an undergraduate and postgraduate level in taxation and trusts law.

Andrew is admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Western Australia and has experience appearing in the Federal and State courts and tribunals.

Adrian Hanrahan

Adrian is a tax and commercial lawyer.

Adrian specialises in the tax and legal affairs of high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and private clients. He also provides his expertise directly to accountants and other solicitors.

Adrian also works as a lecturer at Curtin Law School in both undergraduate (LLB) and postgraduate (MTax) degrees, is a regular presenter at CPD seminars and is a member of the Taxation committee of the Law Society of Western Australia.

Adrian has over 16 years' private practice experience providing advice in tax and private wealth structuring, and additionally, has worked as a Tax Avoidance Taskforce - Tax Specialist, in an Executive Leadership role at the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). His clients have access to his deep knowledge and understanding of the ATO when assisting with their tax disputes.

Adrian is instructed by clients who need solutions to complex tax, trusts, asset protection, SMSF, and legal problems for their businesses and investments including reviews, audits and litigation conducted by the ATO.  He also advises on the restructure of private groups, trading and investment vehicles to implement families’ succession and estate plans.

Adrian holds a Master of Applied Finance, Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of Laws, Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice and has held a variety of specialist designations. He holds memberships with the Law Society of WA, Law Council of Australia, Institute of Public Accountants, Financial Planning Association, and Economics Society of Australia.

Ross is an Adviser at Smailes Krawitz.

Ross provides commercially grounded tax advice to other accounting and legal professionals, high-net-worth individuals, corporates and family offices. 

Ross advises on a wide array of tax matters including corporate transactions and rollovers, employee share schemes, Capital Gains Tax and State taxes.

Ross has a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Western Australia, is a Chartered Accountant and is currently completing his Juris Doctor at the University of Western Australia, with a view to being admitted as a lawyer. He leverages his experience as an accountant to cut through the complexities of a client’s problem and deliver legal solutions that are both practical and technically sound.

THOMAS KING

Private Clients Lawyer

Tom is a private clients lawyer, with expertise in tax, trusts, estates and commercial law. He provides technical tax, trusts and estates advice to high net worth individuals, family groups and corporate entities. 

Tom acts for taxpayers at every stage of review and at audit. He has acted in tax, trusts and superannuation disputes in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and the Supreme Court of Western Australia.

Known as a problem solver at heart, Tom's clients benefit from his knack for finding the way forward through legal frameworks.

Tom is admitted as a lawyer of the Supreme Court of Western Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Professional Economics) and a Juris Doctor from the University of Western Australia, where he tutors in taxation law.
